Ducks can be very elusive, and a hunter requires specific skills to be able to locate and land a shot on these creatures when they least expect it. There is more to duck hunting than simply going out finding duck, shooting the duck, and then taking the duck home. In order to get started with duck hunting, one needs to pass the hunter’s safety course to ensure that the person firing the weapon will be responsible and understands how to use it. This is arguably the most important part of getting into any form of hunting and should be taken seriously to ensure that no injury will occur. In addition to a license, the purchase of a duck tag is required.
After all of this, you’re finally ready to get out there and try your hand at duck hunting. However, this is where it can get a little tricky. First you have to know where to go, then you have to get there, then you have to wait, then you have to lure the ducks in, then you have to hit the shot, then you have to get the duck. It all may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but with some practice, it all becomes second nature.
Shane Kasbergen (‘21) has experience in the realm of duck hunting, and shares some tips of what a beginner should consider before going out. In terms of attire, Shane recommends wearing “dull colors and dressing warm” and also waders. Waders allow the hunter be be able to stand in a generous amount of water,without actually getting wet. Shane also mentioned that since duck season is from October to January, it’s important to use the rest of the year to prepare for this season.
Most importantly however Shane recommends that you “go with someone that has experience with duck hunting. Don’t point your gun at something you don’t want to shoot.”. This is the most important piece of getting into duck hunting and should be taken every seriously. In order to keep everything about having a good time, always prioritize safety.
Jackson Malchow (‘21) is also an avid duck hunter who has a lot to offer in the way of tips for those who are just getting into the world of water fowl hunting. In terms of positioning for the hunter, Jackson recommends “staying up against tules in a shallow pond”. Ducks relate to shallow water and will often congregate in large numbers in areas that match this description. This makes them easy pickings for both and experienced hunter and a new sportsman.
A very popular location for duck hunting here in California is the Sacramento River Delta. During the cold season, ducks can regularly be seen gathering at Frank’s Track, a large, shallow flooded farm field that has nest for hunters to wait for ducks to gather.
“I love it,” Jackson says of duck hunting. “It’s very calming to be out so early in the morning and the adrenaline rush that comes when a duck dives into range is unbeatable.”.
This statement reins true throughout anyone’s duck hunting career, and is something that never truly has the hunter bored. Anticipation of what’s to come is the reason why these men and women come back time and time again to try their luck outdoors.
