Teaching is a stressful and time consuming job, but two CB teachers lift away the stress.
Gainz — the one thing making all teenage boys obsessed with chocolate flavored protein drinks, muscle tees, and flexing their pecs. Religion teacher Mr. Thomas Guro ’03 and history instructor Mr. Evan Boylan embrace the gym craze, working out several times during the week to get fit and stay yoked.
Mr. Guro uses his workout time to release tension and stress, but also to maintain his strength by balancing cardio and weight lifting.
“It’s also time for me to have my time, where I don’t have to worry about students or other issues,” he says.
“Normally I put in earphones so I can jam out to my favorite dancing songs,” he shared. “But let me tell you, it can be tricky to try to dance while on the stairs machine!”
Mr. Boylan’s daily workouts also consist of cardio as a warm up for his muscles before beginning hard core lifting.
“I start out with about 15 minutes of cardio,” the history teacher shared. “I’m getting old, and if I don’t start with cardio and warm my muscles up, I am much more likely to hurt myself.”
After his small cardio warm up, he engages his muscles by lifting weight,s alternating between push and pull days so he can give him muscles a break. This allows different muscles to heal and rebuild while he targets other muscle groups.
“I usually lift for about 45-50 minutes,” he explained. “In between lifts, I try to get in some jump rope and core work.”
Both teachers agreed that working out is fun, but when it come to lower body, it can be anything but.
“I don’t enjoy doing squats or deadlifts, but I try not to neglect leg day,” the assistant football coach informed the Talon.
Mr. Guro agreed, explaining how squats, leg curls, lunges, and other lower body exercises affect his daily life.
“I’m always sore for a couple days after leg day and it probably looks really awkward as I try to walk up and down stairs.”
As uncomfortable and long the soreness is, Mr. Guro and Mr. Boylan will never skip leg day because after all, it is the most important day.
Serious “body builders” such as Mr. Boylan and Mr. Guro, find comfort in working out alone so they can focus on getting ripped without being bothered. This prompted Mr. Boylan to end his membership at 24 Hour Fitness to use the fitness center and weight room here at CB.
“It’s great,” Boylan exclaimed. “We have awesome equipment here and I don’t have to pay a membership fee. I love having access to both the fitness center and weight room.”
The school fitness center and weight room is open to all students who are looking for a good workout. If you are a beginner and need help on a workout plan, go talk to Mr. Guro or Mr. Boylan and they will share their expertise on the best ways to get gainz.
