Family Dance: Be There or Be Square

The secrets behind the most popular CB dance of the year.

The Family Dance is more than just dressing up in the most creative costume, watching your dad shake those truthful hips to Shakira, and being with your parents.

The Family Dance is about being with the Christian Brothers’ community.

When you think of Christian Brothers, the first word to comes to mind is community. We are all about spending time together, whether its cheering at football games, getting pumped at rallies, or even busting your baddest moves at the annual Family Dance.

“Just in the last year or two, they changed the name to the Family Dance and a lot of people are much more comfortable with that,”  explains co-Student Activities Director Ms. Annie Hoekman. “It just invites everybody — it is so much more inclusive!”

Through the Family Dance, past and present CB alumni pop, lock, and drop it to the Top 40 Hits and those rock n’ roll classics.

“I like it when the DJ teaches the parents how to dance to the kids music because the parents who usually don’t listen to that kind of music get some exposure,” says Ms. Hoekman. ”

“Also the students catch a glimpse as what popular music was like — It’s funny to see the kids really enjoy the classics.”

There’s no need to worry about the uncontrollable embarrassment your parents will cause.

“When you’re there everybody is dancing — there’s no need to be embarrassed because everyone’s doing the same thing!” cries Ms. Hoekman.

The best part of the Family Dance is that the pressure is off. There’s no need to pay for dinner or spend hours upon hours looking for the perfect dress.

The Family Dance is one of the biggest successes of the whole year.

“It’s bigger than Homecoming,” claims Ms. Hoekman.

The two are in constant competition. Already teachers are calling up Ms. Hoekman suggesting the theme for next year’s Family Dance, but ultimately it’s up to the junior class council to decide the theme.
