Poems, paintings, and music …Oh my! The CB Literary Arts Journal focuses on these artistic mediums.

Christian Brothers’ Literary Arts Journal is more famously known for their publication at the end of the year, filled with art and creative student writing. However, not many knows what LAJ really is about. It almost sounds like a secret underground society…a cool underground society.  So what do they do?

Daniel Walton (’15)  is one of the head editors of the club.

“Number one: we focus on having fun,” he says. “If you are not having fun, you won’t experience being with the coolness of being with the people. Then there really is no reason to be doing artwork”.

How does LAJ attract people to their club?

“During junior year, I had Mrs. Wanket” class and she taught me that writing can be fun and awesome and she kept me at it,” Daniels says. “I admire the people [who do] it because they are happy to be in it and be with fun people. They like the literary arts”.

Mrs. Natalia Schorn ’00 is the moderator of the Literary Arts journal and a strong advocate for the arts.

“It is student run and organized,” she says. “Everything from the journal is from CB students and all their creativity.”

The Literary Arts Journal is in fact heavily student run, with their own Twitter and Tumblr account. They try to publish as much student artwork and writing  as they can.

“As a club we focus on getting more people aware of LAJ and its existence and getting kids comfortable and acknowledging their writing and creativity,” Mrs. Schorn says.

After writing, painting, and reading, LAJ takes time to enjoy the artwork of other artists from the Sacramento area. Recently, LAJ experienced the fun of Second Saturday, a small art walk featuring  art exhibits in Sacramento where they explored different approaches of common art.

So, how can you experience LAJ?

“We do have the journal that we produce every year, but also have the tea party in November, and sing-a-long movie days. Ideas are an art form as well,” Daniel says.

“Your teachers can submit your work for you,” Mrs. Schorn adds. “Of course, they ask for your permission.”

LAJ meets every Thursday at Falcon Flex, so come on by and enjoy the art, or check LAJ out at their social media accounts.
