C’est La Vie! French Club at CB

Did you know French Club is active on the CB campus?

French, food, friends, and fun! That is French Club in a nutshell.

After a wave of new members reinvigorated the group this year, CB’s French Club has enjoyed a variety of activities, including potlucks, Secret Santa, and a French film called Bienvenue Chez les Ch´tis (Welcome to the Sticks).

Mrs. Stefanie Howorun, known as Madame to students, took on the responsibility of moderating French Club this year despite her packed schedule. It’s completely worth it for her because she feels the club serves as “a great opportunity for kids to celebrate French”, a language for which she has a true passion.

One of the main ways members celebrate French culture is through their taste buds.

“The food is always a big pull,” chuckles Mrs. Howorun.

In fact, Daniel McCarthy (’16) says his favorite moment in the club so far has been “making crepes and eating them”, describing Mrs. Howorun’s special recipe as “really good”.

Beyond the sweet treats, French Club is the perfect way to appreciate the Francophone world beyond the language skills taught in the classroom.

“It helps go a little deeper than just the regular French class,” says Ben Slakey (’17).

This past Thursday, the club members applied their knowledge by creating valentines with French terms of endearment for their friends. Annotating red paper hearts with such amusing nicknames as “ma loutre” (my otter) and “mon petit choux” (my little cabbage-head), the French Club members helped make French come alive in a fun way.
