CB students have mixed feelings as Valentine’s Day approaches.
A wonderful day full of chocolate, flowers, and love? Or a stressful commercial holiday designed to make single people feel miserable? Opinions on Valentine’s Day swing all over the scale.
Some people enjoy Valentine’s Day because they get the chance to show their loved ones how much they appreciate them.
“It’s a fun holiday to express your love for others,” says Marcela Cuomo (’15), “not just someone you’re romantically interested in.”
Marcela enjoys baking treats for her friends to demonstrate her love for them, and enjoys the day for its simple pleasures.
“Chocolate’s good,” laughs the friendly junior.
Others feel that society makes too much of a deal over the holiday.
“It’s blown out of proportion,” remarks Joe Krieg (’14), acknowledging that people feel pressure to have the perfect romantic day.
With the whirlwind of planning dates, buying flowers, and writing sentimental cards, people may lose sight of what the holiday is really about.
“It’s not something to obsess over,” comments Ally Boulas (‘15).
Furthermore, Valentine’s Day can feel lonely to those who lack that special someone.
“I don’t really like it, because I never have a valentine,” laments Leandro Johnson (’16), adding that the explosion of hearts and the color pink everywhere gets “kind of annoying after a while.”
“If I wanna buy some candy,” says the sophomore with a shake of his head, “people are like, ‘oh, who’s your valentine?’ and I don’t really have one.”
He feels frustrated that he can’t even get some sweet treats for himself without people having Valentine’s Day on the brain.
Despite its many pitfalls, if you take Valentine’s Day for what it is, it can be a great chance to show the loved ones in your life how much you care. Remember that beyond all the gifts and treats, heartfelt sentiments mean the most.
