Take an in-depth look at CB’s very own Mathletes team.

Among the many athletic teams on campus, there is one team that doesn’t get a whole lot of credit. They practice and compete just like any other sports team, even if it is not physically demanding, Mathletes is definitely one of the most mentally exhausting sports that CB has to offer and the Talon went to find out more about one of the most overlooked athletic teams here on campus.

So what exactly do the Mathletes do?

“It’s all for fun,” explains Captain of the team Dana Kimball (’14).

According to Dana, Mahletes is “a relaxed academic competition,” where students who are interested in mathematics can showcase their knowledge.

On every second thursday of the month, the CB team goes out and competes against other schools in the area.

A typical Mathlete competition consists of 5 tests which include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry/analysis, and a group test at the end. Each group is comprised of five people and three of the five group members take three of the five tests.

“There are five tests and there are five people per team, but each member of the team only takes three of those tests so there are two tests you don’t take,” Dana further explains. “Each test is taken by three team members [making it so that] at any given time during the testing there are two people…who are not taking a test.”

Not only is the process of competing a confusing concept to grasp, but with multiple tests on a variety of math subjects, it is clear to see why Mathletes is so mentally demanding, which is why Dana sees it as a legitimate sport.

“It’s a mental exercise,” he states, adding that “if you have a loose interpretation of a sport, then it’s a sport.”

Don’t forget to cheer on our fellow Falcons as they travel to Florin High School for their next competition on November 14th.
