The Christian Brothers varsity football team has had a tough last couple games, losing to Jesuit at Holy Bowl and Whitney the week after. They head into Capital Valley Conference play with a 3-2 record and very high expectations for league and beyond.

Having several tough losses has not affected the teams confidence, and the Talon caught up with Kellen Ralph (’15) to learn more about where the team is mentally.

“We still believe we are a strong team, but we haven’t played to our potential the last couple weeks,” the junior center said. “In a way I’m kind of glad we haven’t hit our stride yet because that is what we would want to happen in the playoffs.”

Teams that start strong do not always keep that same intensity through the season and often falter down the stretch, especially at the high school level.

Losing games also helps to point possible spots for improvements, and Zach Ewersten (’14) gave insight on what the team needs to develop to become a league championship contender.

“We just need to have balance,” the senior lineman said. “When everything clicks at the same time we are a top tier team. We just need to figure out how to get that balance consistently and use all of our weapons.”

The team has had success on the offensive side of the ball so far with strong performances from running back Mason Stahley (’14) and quarterback Chris Guillen (’15), and are looking to improve on their defense to become a more well rounded team.

With necessary improvements made, the Falcons will be a team to watch for in the CVC. They begin league action on Friday against Oakmont at Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College.
