2650 miles. 5 months. One man. Find out about the ambitious post-graduation plans of one CB senior.
With the end of the year approaching, most seniors are looking forward to entering the college life come August and September. Senior Korbi Thalhammer (’13) plans on taking a year off before heading to college.
This AP student has always had a passion for the marvels of nature. Next year, Korbi will work as a tutor for a few months and then head on an exciting 2650 mile endeavor by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.
The trail runs from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington.
“I’ve been volunteering for the trail since about 7th grade,” he told the Talon. “I’ve hiked about 300 miles of it already.”
The 5 month journey means much more to Korbi than just an average hike. He has spent years learning the necessary survival skills and knows that the trek will not be effortless.
“I’m hoping for a sense of confidence and independence and a better understanding of nature and of other people who I expect to meet along the way,” the thrill seeking student explained.
Korbi’s former experience on the trail has given him a a slight understanding of what to expect and he is extremely excited.
“I want the experience of [hiking the whole trail] because doing the trail in 5 months is so much different than hiking sections of it over multiple years,” he said.
Although he will not be attending college next year, the outgoing CB student will learn a lot about nature, and more importantly, himself.
Following his hike, Korbi will re-apply to the school which he has already been accepted – UC Berkeley.
The CB community is no stranger to Korbi’s curiosity – earlier this year, KBFT followed this “urban adventurer” on one of his voyages.
