Find out about those fowl creatures that have been roaming around Christian Brothers lately.

Everyone who walks around the Christian Brothers campus on a daily basis has noticed these little critters, but the feelings these little chickens stir up among students and staff might surprise you.

Mr. Steve Barsanti, CB’s Director of Facilities recalls the first time he noticed that chickens.

“I heard them before I saw them,” he says.

The chickens mysteriously arrived sometime in early December. Perhaps they were some kind of Christmas gift to the Christian Brothers community. But whatever they are, they seem to be here to stay.

To date, there are four chickens — two black ones and two red ones. They can be seen and heard all over campus, but most often can be found on the main lawn, prancing about celebrating their existence.

“Every morning I see them jump over the fence,” Mr. Barsanti says. “I don’t know whose they are.”

But the AP Macroeconomics instructor doesn’t seem concerned at all about these peculiar creatures roaming the campus and interacting with the students.

“When I went to Sac State there were chickens running around the campus all the time.”

The students of Christian Brothers have certainly grown to love these creatures.

Daniel Duffy (‘13) sums up the general sentiment best by saying, “When I see them, I just feel happy.”

Indeed, there is something to be said for getting to see these majestic animals, wild and free. It’s almost a reminder that if students do their work and stick with school long enough, they will be free, just like the chickens.

Many students almost consider the chickens to be a new kind of mascot for Christian Brothers. Mr. Barsanti says he is fine with students loving the chickens, “ss long as we don’t change our name to the fighting chickens.”

Even with having to clean up after the chickens from time to time, Mr. Barsanti and the rest of the faculty and staff at Christian Brothers have come to accept the chickens and treat them like they are a part of the school.

“It’s fun,” he says. “I’d only get concerned if someone got sick from them.”
