Intellectual wunderkinds Sergiy Vasylyev (’14) and Ryan Dempsey (’13) created the Modern Physics and Technologies Club at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year to expand upon their love for academics and to influence a fervor for learning and experimentation in their fellow students.

“Sergiy and I have a deep interest in math and science and were looking for a direction to go with it” Dempsey tells The Talon.

The two have gained significant experience in applied sciences in the past which they bring to the table at club discussions and in carrying out experiments.

Dempsey spent his days volunteering at a naval base over this past summer. Vasylyev, on the other hand, utilizes constant access to the scientific materials which his parents keep in his home for their occupations.

The two upperclassmen began the club with a list of objectives and project ideas. Throughout the year they have accrued funds to purchase project materials.

“We had to pull the money out our pockets and some of this stuff is pretty expensive, but it will be worth it”  Sergiy explains.

Vasylyev, Dempsey and company are currently working on plans for a  laser beam, and will begin construction within the next few days.

Ryan and Sergiy, two of CB’s brightest students, plan to use their problem solving skills and inherent intellect to complete the project within the next two weeks.

After the completion of the current project, club members plan to put together a basic but fully functioning computer system.

Though the project and club as a whole are solely for the enjoyment of the club members, Dempsey believes that the his group of young scientist may find mediums through which they make display their work.

“Right now the project is just for fun, but if an opportunity to put our work into a competition arises we would surely consider it” Dempsey remarks.

Though not quite ripe, the seeds for the scientific careers of members of CB’s Modern Physics and Technologies club have been planted and are beginning to grow. The future is bright for CB’s pundits of physics.
