Find out how one brave CB teacher would survive a zombie apocalypse.
The focus on zombies in popular culture has skyrocketed in recent months. In animated features such as Hotel Transylvania and ParaNorman, in big screen hits like Warm Bodies, and in the wildly praised TV show The Walking Dead, zombies are taking over our everyday lives.
American Literature and Mastering the Essay teacher Ms. Maureen Wanket is quite the fan of zombies herself. Her interest in the undead piqued after seeing The Walking Dead and reading works of fiction focused around the legendary ghouls.
“I read a really good young adult book that I think [students] would like, called Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan,” she says. “I read that a couple of years ago and I loved the idea of it.”
Then, when The Walking Dead premiered in 2010, Ms. Wanket was enamored all over again.
“I got super into the notion of the apocalypse,” she admits, “and just the kind of extremes it could push people to in the quest for survival. It reduces everyone to their true personality and I think it would be interesting to see people drop their masks and be really, really real.”
In the event of a zombie apocalypse descending upon Sacramento — or the world — this zombie aficionado is confident she could fend off attacks from the undead.
“First of all, the Wankets are absolutely survivors,” she declares. “We have chickens, an organic garden, we are set.”
Ms. Wanket’s strength of character might also contribute to her survival in case of apocalypse.
“I think I am [really real] anyway, most of the time, so I think I would definitely survive,” she asserts.
For those who may not be so transparent, this confident teacher advises above all else, “just don’t be dumb.”
“Keep your wits about you, that’s what is most important.”
