Football is now over, meaning the cheerleaders must gear up for basketball season.

With the football season over basketball has begun. It is not just a new season for the hoopers but for the cheerleaders as well.

Cheerleaders at all levels participate in cheering for both football as well as men and women’s basketball. Now that they are starting a new season, they will miss the experiences that only football season can give them and look forward to what basketball has to offer.

“I will definitely miss football season.” says varsity cheerleader Sarah Simoes (’13). “I will miss the games and performing at half time. [And] Of course nothing can take away from the feeling of cheering at Holy Bowl.”

Though football will be missed, there are many exciting things to look forward to with basketball season already starting. These sports are very different and cheering for them is extremely different as well.

“For football season we do a lot more stunting because we just have more space for it,” says Simoes, referring to a form of throwing and doing tricks with girls in the air. “I will miss that but it will be nice to be in a warm gym.”

Basketball season not only includes a warm gym but more intimate crowds and the annual Holy Hoop games vs. Jesuit, to look forward to. The cheerleaders are ready for the change of atmosphere and cheers.

“Basketball season is fun because the crowd is a lot closer so they can see our dances better and hear us [more] clearly.” Sarah claims. “We do new cheers and I love them because they have cool beats with lots of stomping. Also, we do a lineup around the locker room when the players come out, [and] that’s always fun.”

The cheerleaders take the last few weeks of November to learn basketball cheers, clean up their dances, and work on stunting. This preparation period will pay off after Christmas break when the cheerleaders will cheer their first game.

Make sure to come out and support the basketball teams as well as watch out for the hardworking cheerleaders as they begin a new season of cheering.
