Christian Brothers High School annually hosts a Blood Drive that features a high amount of participation from many teachers, parents, and students.

For the past several years, the Blood Drive has been organized under the supervision of Mrs. Darci Calista and her staff of student athletic trainers. Since Mrs. Calista is on maternity leave at the moment, AP Biology teacher Mrs. Nicole Brousseau has warmly volunteered to assist the athletic trainers in organizing and running the Fall 2012 Blood Drive.

“When I was in college I ran some of the blood drives so I’m kind of used to running and organizing this very important event,” the science teacher says.

Although Mrs. Brousseau will be very occupied with running this very rewarding event and will not be able to give blood, she highly encourages students who are at least 16 years of age and weight at least 110 pounds to donate blood.

“It is very important to give blood — it is a life saving event,” she says. “I personally had an experience with my father who needed over 10 units of blood and knowing that people with his blood [type] had donated blood was life-changing.”

As an incentive, students are rewarded with a classy grey t-shirt that will be able to be worn on Monday December 4 with jeans. Additionally, the shirts will be considered CB approved and therefore will be able to be worn to school.

The process of giving blood is fairly quick and easy. Once completing a release and consent form, participants arrive at their scheduled time in the Field House, and then are redirected to a station where various questions will be asked as well as checking the iron in the donor’s blood.

They are then seated in a very comfortable and inviting chair where a specialist awaits them to complete the blood drawing process. During this time, donors may bring a music playing device to redirect their attention if they feel nervous or uneasy.

After this process is completed donors are highly encouraged to relax in a waiting area where a lot of sweet treats will be available to them. Students then are asked to return to class.

There is still one more day to sign up to donate blood. Student athletic trainers and Mrs. Brousseau will be anxiously waiting to sign you up.

It’s quick and easy, you save lives, and you get treats. What’s not to love?
