Take a look at the pros and cons of gum chewing at Christian Brothers from the students’ perspective.
Every student know that gum chewing is prohibited on the CB campus. But some students find it helpful in their studies and helps them focus on their school work in the classroom.
Studies have actually shown that the act of gum chewing can positively affect a students concentration when it comes to studying or doing homework. The studies say that the act of chewing is what helps students focus.
But we all know the negative effects of allowing gum on our campus. If not properly disposed of, the gum will stick to anything — resulting in a messy campus and angry shoes.
” Although some people say its a joke, I think it actually helps to improve my academics,” says Matt Emslie (’13). Matt has given gum credit for some of his success in high school.
He went on to say, “If the school tries to fix the problem of making sure people throw away their gum, we wouldn’t have a problem.”
He raises an excellent point if everybody just tossed their gum in a garbage can, it would keep the campus clean and those who use gum to focus would be allowed to do so.
Each side has good reasons why they on why they are there, but maybe we can see this rule changed further in the future.
