CB’s fall musical is a performance of biblical proportions.

On Thursday I took the opportunity to watch the opening night performance of Christian Brothers’ production of Godspell at the New Helvetia Theatre on R Street. Because CB no longer performs at the L1 Theatre due to the construction of the new classrooms, I had no idea what to expect.

Much to my surprise, the New Helvetia Theatre gave off that classic L1 Theatre vibe. The stage was similar in size, the lighting was reminiscent of our old theatre, and the seating was spacious and filled with people. Fortunately, Tech Staff Member Mark Wilson (’13) scored me a seat in the back row, where I was free to take pictures without disturbing the rest of the audience.

As I expected, the musical was nothing short of excellent. Kaalen Kirrene (’13) excited the crowd with his many rock and roll poses, while Sarah Hotz (’13) and Allison Lian (’14) stunned the crowd with some of the best singing and acting I’ve ever seen at a Christian Brothers’ production.

I enjoyed the humor that connected with people in our age group; making references to songs like “Mercy” by Kanye West, a “Gangam Style” dance, and sassy questions in response to the statements “Jesus”, played by Dylan Santana (’14) said.

This perfect combination of contemporary humor, mysteriousness of the Bible, and talent of the acting cast made this musical the best I’ve seen so far in my time at Christian Brothers.
