With the conclusion of fall sports, winter sports start anew.

Although some of our fall sports teams here at Christian Brothers are still participating in their respective playoffs, when the calendar struck November 5, the winter sports season officially began.

It’s fresh start for some of CB’s sports teams, with some looking to continue off of last year’s success and while others are seeking to reverse their fortunes from last winter.

Our women’s basketball team is coming off yet another successful campaign: 24-8 overall record, 10-0 league record and CVC champions, advancement to SJS Division III semifinals, and advancement to the second round of the Division III NorCal championship tournament. It should also be noted that Bishop O’Dowd, the team the Falcons fell to in the NorCal playoffs, were the eventual California State Champion.

This team is poised to not only duplicate, but improve on last season’s success. They return their top three scorers from last season: Ana Burch (’13) (16.1 ppg last season), Alicia Gonzalez (’14) (11.3 ppg), and Niel Valmores (’13) (7.4 ppg). With the addition of highly touted sophomore Kira Mckechnie (’15) this team should be a favorite to make a deep playoff run.

The men’s team finished last season with a 9-18 overall record and 3-7 in league.

This season is sure to be more promising with returning veterans like Ben McFadden (’13), whose season last year was cut short due to injury. Juniors Brandon Thompson (’14) and Matthew Vanenburg (’14) will return for their second year of varsity ball.

It should be an exciting season of Falcon hoops so come out and support our Brothers ballers!
