For many Christian Brothers sports fans, rooting for local pro sports team is a common theme. Therefore, you can understand why over the past several weeks, the campus has been littered with hootin’ and howlin’ Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants fans expressing their team pride, as both clubs made the Major League Baseball postseason.
As life-long, die hard A’s fan myself, I will admit that I was probably the main person voicing my love for my team, but definitely not the only fanatic on campus.
“[I ‘ve been a Giants fan] really since birth, I remember the days as a young one at Candlestick Park even before AT&T [Park], watching [Barry] Bonds, [Rich] Aurilia, J.T. Snow who was my favorite player,” says Steven Hennessy ’14.
The Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Division Series three games to two after losing the first two in the series. They are currently in the National League Championship Series against the defending World Series champions St. Louis Cardinals had will play a Game 7 against the Redbirds on Monday evening.
Across the Bay, the Oakland A’s had one of the most improbable seasons in recent baseball history. The same team that was predicted by many baseball analysts before the season to possibly lose over 100 games, not only made the playoffs, but won the American League West division, by beating the defending American League champs, the Texas Rangers, on the last game of the season. Fellow Athletics fan Angel Alvarado(’13) weighed in when asked how he felt when the A’s got a playoff birth.
“Words cannot describe how excited I was, I probably was screaming for a couple minutes,” says Alvarado. He later adds, “We won 94 games, so all the years of being an A’s fan, finally paid off.”
Christian Brothers students love their pro sports teams and this baseball season was a memorable one for many.
