Mind and Body Fitness, formally known simply as Yoga class, has become one of the more popular physical education classes at Christian Brothers because it does not require any competition among students.
The name of the class was changed this year so students have a more clear understanding of the purpose of the course. The class spends most time working on stretching and strengthening the student’s bodies as well as forming endurance.
“Mind and Body Fitness focuses on two things, emphasizing work on the mind and increasing focus which eliminates chatter” says instructor Mr. Bobby Fresques.
A normal day in this class would start with a warm up and prayer meditation on the Gospel of the day application Mr. Fresques has on his iPad. Then, the class would go into work phase and hold challenging poses. The students close the class by enjoying a final relaxation as a reward for forking hard.
This class may seem simple but Mr. Fresques finds that many of his students have trouble focusing, which then affects on how capable they are of hitting their position.
“It is challenging for many teenagers to block out all issues mentally,” he says. “There are so many things going on in their lives but taking the time to block these distractions out is the difference between hitting a pose or falling [down].”
This class has become extremely popular — there are three yoga classes with 30 students each. This class is a favorite among students because the exercises are all of individual work as opposed to competitive styled exercises, like many PE classes.
“Students love this class because it gives them the opportunity to participate in a P.E. without being compared to other students,” Mr. Fresques says. “That is silly to be so competitive all the time that should not matter. Mind and Body Fitness is an individual experience”
Mind and Body Fitness is taking over the P.E. classes at Christian Brothers. If anyone is looking for a personal experience with no competition this is the class for you!
