How often do you think about the Roman Empire?” is the question sweeping TikTok right now. Around the world, people are discovering that men think about the Roman Empire a lot. Like, once a day a lot.

From this trend stemmed another Roman Empire trend: what someone’s personal Roman Empire is. Anything from Taylor Swift to Prom Night 2017 can be someone’s Roman Empire.

The statement, “The 2005 VMAs are my Roman Empire” might be something we would understand now but two years ago would have us going “Are you crazy?” A reason the Roman Empire trend is so popular on TikTok now is because it allows people to express their niche judgements free from judgement under the label of “my Roman Empire.” After some investigate journalism on Tiktok for the Talon, here are some of the most interesting Roman Empires I’ve found people express:

  • “When my mom told me that her high school sweetheart reached out to her after years of no contact on the night before his wedding just to tell her he wished it was her” – user816192482362 on Tiktok
  • “Once someone says something negative about me its all I can think about for weeks” – user1093747287888 on Tiktok
  • “When the most horrible person I know told me they want to major in psychology” – dakowenby on Tiktok
  • “my cow lick piece of hair that prevents me from actually being able to have a real middle part” – taylorsoswag on tiktok

So I went around to CB’s male population trying to answer the question: is there a correlation between men and thinking about the Roman Empire? To start I asked social studies instructor Mr. Vince Leporini who proved this theory right, saying “I think about it once a week or so”.

“As social science teachers, I feel like we think about the Roman Empire more than the average guy,” he shares. “Even religion teachers think about Paul in Rome and those kinds of things.”

Mr. Lep brings up a good point – someone’s job will do a lot in determining how often they think of the Roman Empire. To try to get a more unbiased point of view I then turned to Ava Turner (‘24) who texted her dad and asked how often he thought about the Roman Empire. Her dad, a construction worker, replied with “not too often” further proving Mr. Lep’s point. Maybe the question we should be asking here is how often do teachers or others in specific fields think about the Roman empire rather than men in general.

Next, I talked to the male students of CB, seeing if the Roman Empire was a common thought amongst them. “Not too often” Sebastian Fernandez y Garcia (‘24) said. “I think more about the Mayan Empire to be honest.” Emerson Reel (‘24) says “once or twice a month because my dad brings it up.”

Next I went around CB and found what the Roman Empires of the Falcons are. Seeing the results showed me how diverse our interests are. When asked her Roman Empire, Val Marquez (‘24) was ready. “Pitch Perfect 2” she said definitively. “Some of the lines in it just speak to me.”

Along the same lines is Natasha Reese (‘25) saying Little Women. Meanwhile, on a completely different end Larissa Kerr (‘25) says her “Roman Empiree” is “starting an off the grid civilization.”

As seen on Tiktok and within CB, a Roman empire can be anything. The most important thing is that it is something you absolutely love. Keep dreamin’ up your Roman empires CB.
