The Sacramento Regional Transit has been serving the greater Sacramento area for 46 years starting with just buses and quickly expanding to light rail. This year, SacRT is providing area schools, including Christian Brothers, free passes for students from grades TK through 12 for a whole year. This program, RydeFreeRT, provides an easy and efficient way of travel like home to school, or even to nighttime Kings games when you don’t feel like paying for parking.

Whether it’s going from home to school or school to work, Zach Mendoza (‘20), uses the free Student SacRT pass weekly to get to his desired destination.

“I work most days of the week at Delta Shores, and I don’t always have a ride to and from work. But what’s nice about the pass is I can use it for the bus to get home  and I don’t have to pay a penny,” Zach said with a satisfied smile.

The average cost of a RT pass ranges from $10 to $20 for a monthly student pass and $3.50 for a day pass. In the end, students can save anywhere from $10 to $70 a month. Not only does the pass save money for the SacRT services, but it also helps save money on gas and parking.

Along with the freedom of traveling whenever and wherever, Zach feels as though he’s doing the planet a favor by being one less person using gas for his own vehicle.

“After learning and seeing the different effects gas and cars can have on the Earth, it feels good to be able to say I use the buses to get around and help save the earth,” Zach stated.

The pass is only available in select districts, including some schools in the Sacramento Diocese. Many do not know where the students get the passes. Luckily for CB students, SacRT made it easy for CB students to get the pass by giving Registrar Mrs. Woods (‘02) limited supplies of the passes.

“I was honestly surprised on how easy it was to get the pass,” Zach said. “I thought that maybe there would be a catch like a small payment, but no. It was completely free.”

In order to get a pass, go see Mrs. Woods in the main office and make sure to bring your student ID. The pass started this year on October 1st and ends at the end of next September.
