Living in Sacramento is a blessing. In every direction there is a location that can be explored; even the city itself is full of great places. Travel can be considered one of the best luxuries in life, and there is no reason to wait. Traveling takes careful planning and it can easily become costly due to food, gas and overall expenses. There are many tips and tricks for making your day trip cost effective and rejuvenating. The Talon decided to focus on the opinions of two adventurous individuals, Erica Scholz (’18) and Cruz Solano (’18), to inspire your next day trip.

1. Plan in advance.

This is one of the most important parts to having a successful trip because it involves the important decisions. Choosing drivers, splitting up prices for gas or toll fees, and deciding on a date. This also involves figuring out who is available, who can fit in the car, and who is ready for adventure. Deciding on a destination is always the most difficult part, but once everything is in place, the stressful decision making process is worth it.

2. Pack for the day.

Always pack light, but avoid under packing. Make sure to check the temperature of where you’re planing on going  — layering is always a good idea. Definitely bring a water bottle, previously made lunches, and snacks to save money. Having cash on hand can be handy, but never put your assets all in one place, especially if you’re carrying a large amount.

Erica’s essentials include, “headphones, water, camera, snacks and money”.

For Cruz, it depends mainly on the destination.

“If you are spending the day locally, pack lightly because of the accessibility to home. If far, I always bring an extra jacket, food,  more or less depending on budget and something for entertainment on the car ride.”

3. Assemble the squad.

Finding the perfect group of friends to go on a trip with is easily done when you are open minded. Erica says”go with fun people” as Cruz adds that you should”surround yourself with amusing and lively people”. Coordination between each other helps create a positive environment. For example, when going to a specific place, it’s going to be extremely difficult to hit every single spot that each member wants to go. Being able to pick and choose through a list helps get everyone’s thoughts in order and compromises can be made to please everyone. This can be a rough sketch of what the day ahead holds.

4. Drive to your first destination.

Make sure your playlist is popping, and or whoever calls aux is playing a good mix the whole car can vibe to. Having two drivers makes the trip easier, so choose someone to drive there and someone else to drive back.

5. Stay open minded.

Always have a general idea of how the day is going to look, but be open to adding a new destination. Exploring new places keeps the trip exciting and can have the potential to becoming a new favorite spot.

“Make plans so you always have something fun to do next, but it’s okay if everything doesn’t work out as planned”, Erica shared.

Day trips are important because they can be refreshing and stir up the typical routine.

“Day trips are crucial in giving yourself a break from school and work,” Erica says. Cruz believes that”exploring around where you live or other areas can help in identifying different places.”

Day trips in Sacramento can create a new appreciation for your city and all that it has to offer. These trips are meant for gaining a new perspective and making memories that will last forever with people you cherish. It is also a chance to get out of your comfort zone and with make you more adventurous.

Cruz highly recommends San Francisco and Forest Hill Bridge in Auburn, especially if you like hiking and swimming during the warmer months. Erica’s top locations include Point Reyes, San Francisco, and Six Flags.
