Not two not three not four but five straight championships — Ms. Bowers is striving for another Mag Drive victory.
Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and Serena Williams. All are great competitors and winners at what they do. Someone else who also belongs on that list is Ms. Mary Bowers, winner of the last four magazine drives and counting.
Over her four year winning streak, she’s had sophomores, juniors, and seniors. She says all you need to win is the, “let’s do this mentality”.
But how does she get this mentality in her students?
“You have to get the students excited about winning” and have them “play off of the competition,” she says.
The literature teachers gets them excited using bribes like donuts, pie, bagels, and other types of food. The bribes really motivate the students to sell.
Efren Sanchez (’16) said it really motivated him because he “loves to eat”. Reactions like that makes it no wonder why she keeps on winning.
With such a long winning streak, you have to wonder how she keeps on staying motivated to win. According to Ms. Bowers, the key is to just have fun with it. A lot of that fun comes from competing with the the other teachers. Two of her main competitors are Mr. Tom English and Mr. Brendan Hogan ’95.
This year, Mr. Hogan and Mr. English tried to trash talk her on KBFT, citing that she is a cheater for taking over a B set that is not actually hers. Ms. Bowers responded in a fun, trash talking nature that she feels, “sad” for them.
“Mr English needs to look up the word cheater because he doesn’t know what it means,” she says.
Ms. Bowers truly enjoys the competition and says that anything she says when trash talking is in good nature. Just know that when she says she’s going to win, even if it’s in good spirited fun, she will win. So expect a fifth straight magazine drive title for Ms. Bowers.
