Spit out your gum, put your phone away, and leave those Birkenstocks at home. Mr. McCarthy is back as co-dean — and he’s here to stay.

This school year, Christian Brothers High School welcomes back a familiar face to campus: CB alum Mr. Mike McCarthy ’80 makes his return to school as the new Dean of Students. An excited Mr. McCarthy is ready to take on a leadership position and relive the eccentric feelings of being on the CB campus.

Mr. McCarthy has no shortage of leadership experience. Before accepting his new job this summer, he worked at the Sacramento Police Department for 32 years, working in a variety of assignments such as patrol and detective work. His last 15 years in the police force, he was entrusted with the position of captain of police and previous job was managing the Sacramento 9-1-1 communications center.

Having worked with kids in the city of Sacramento and studying juvenile justice at the University of Southern California, it is no surprise Mr. McCarthy wanted the job as Co-Dean of Students.

“I have a real passion for working with youth,” he explains.

As the new Dean starts his first year at Christian Brothers, he is thankful for the position he is in.

“I am grateful for the welcoming by the students and faculty,” he says.

Students of CB are fortunate to have leaders such as Mr. McCarthy who take pride in helping students.

The McCarthy family is the epitome of a “family connection.” Accompanying the Dean on campus are his wife Mrs. Kristen McCarthy, who serves as Director of Communications and Admissions and his youngest son, Daniel McCarthy (’16).

The family’s oldest son, Matt McCarthy ’09, is also a CB alum. It is fair to say the McCarthy family knows CB well and continues to implement their legacy on the school.

Apart from his job and family, Mr. McCarthy is a passionate sports fan. The new co-Dean is an avid Oakland Athletics fan, just like the previous Dean, Mr. Dave Levasseur. Mr. McCarthy also enjoys going to Sacramento Kings games.

As the school year carries on, McCarthy is eager to meet new faces and continue to help make CB the place to be.
