A spectacular comeback resulted in a 2015 CB Intramural Basketball title.
Late game heroics by Conner Swan (’15) propelled Team Shaqtown to victory in the CB intramural basketball championship game.
A packed Jack Whitry Field House was on hand to see the conclusion of Christian Brothers Intramural Basketball season in which Team Shaqtown (7-1) played Junior Mafia (7-1)
The game began with a barrage of jumpers by Junior Mafia’s Cameron Johnson (’16). He was hitting from mid range and from behind the 3-point line — there were talks of turning the sprinkler system on, he was so on fire.
Team Shaqtown looked all but defeated. Junior Mafia had a commanding 8-2 lead as spectators began to file out of the Field House.
Then it all turned around.
“We had been in this position before. We were down 8-3 in the semifinal game and still won that one, so we said ‘why not this one,'” says Shaqtown center Jimmy McCauley (’15).
The comeback was ignited by Swan’s physical play, most notably with a huge rebound and turnaround post shot.
“Well I got the ball in my hands, which I was surprised about, I think it was off a rebound,” he says “It all happened pretty fast. I was in the post when I made the go ahead bucket that turned the game around. I started getting rebounds or tipping it out to Colton [Wackman (’15)] or Jimmy.”
Team Shaqtown proceeded to complete the comeback winning the game 13-11.
“Connor Swan’s shot gave us the momentum to soldify the win,” explained Shaqtown point guard Joe McNamara (’16). “Junior Mafia couldn’t handle us after that momentum shift.”
It was a great game to close out what was a great intramural season. Thank you to the great commissioners, Ms. Adkins-Williams and Mr. Diaz for putting together another successful season of intramural basketball in their first years at the helm.
