The women’s soccer team has eyes on back to back section championships.
The women’s soccer program at CB has transitioned from young and promising to a traditional power. Our Lady Falcons look to have another strong season coming off a Division III Section Championship in 2014.
With only several seniors leaving last year, many key pieces from the team return.
Leading the pack are three seniors signed to play at the collegiate level. Striker Nici Lopez(’15) is signed to Hawaii, and midfielders Andrea Martinez(’15) and Lexi de la Paz(’15) are signed to CSU Stanislaus and William Jessup, respectively.
The strong, experienced core is complemented by some promising young talent as well. Hailey Green (’18), Emma Thompson (’18), Olivia Ortiz (’18), and Olivia Ledesma (’18) were all moved up to Varsity as freshmen.
The blend of youth and experience is even more deadly when paired with one of the most successful coaches in the area, Mr. Jake Hunley.
When asked about Coach Hunley, Emma was nothing but positive.
“I think he’s a great coach,” she says. “He knows how to win and we have a talented group who can learn a lot from him.”
Something that the team has never lacked is a difficult schedule, and this year is no different. With the Falcons playing defending D-I champion St. Francis along with the deeply talented Capital Athletic League, no games can be taken easily.
Junior defender Miyah Mata(’16) has faith in the team regardless of the difficulty of schedule.
“I think we should be worried about SF, Rio [Americano] and Vista [del Lago],” the junior says, “But we are more than capable of beating all of them. We’re really good this year.”
The team took fourth place in last weekend’s Cal Spring Classic, and take on St. Francis in the opener of the Christian Brothers Invitational on Tuesday March 3.
