After nearly four years, a secret band in the senior class is now opening up and sharing their talent with the rest of us.

Christian Brothers has a variety of talent and characters, but many do not know that three of our seniors are in a band together.

Patrick Bell (’15), Jacob Absher (’15), and Peter Maloney (’15) are the masterminds and superstars of this mysterious band called Open the Floodgates. Before the band, these three had a strong bond that goes way back to freshman year.

“Peter and I have gone to school together since kindergarten and me and Jake played freshman football together,” Patrick shares.

But their idea to come together as a band came to life just this year.

Peter says the band of two was created as a fun activity to passtime.

“Me and Patrick have had [the band] since 8th grade, but we weren’t serious,” Peter adds.

At the beginning of senior year, Patrick pushed for the band to make a bigger, better comeback. This happened with the addition of Jake Absher.

“It kind of just happened once I heard Peter and Patrick talking about it,” Jake says.

The three were inspired by their love of music to team up as a band. For their weekly practice, the three meet up at the Maloney household and jump right into music making.

Patrick is on the guitar, Jake is on piano with some vocals, and Peter is also on piano while mostly playing the drums. Although they enjoy covering songs from some of their own favorite bands, the three love performing original songs.

“We have all of our songs written, so there’s about 10 to 12 songs with lyrics and rifts,” Patrick says.

“But, the problem is connecting melodies. So, we have 2 completed songs,” Peter adds.

But where can other CB students listen to these two songs? The three share that a few songs may be posted on YouTube and hopefully SoundCloud.

Although they mainly record songs, the thought of a public debut is frequent amongst the three.

“Open Mic maybe, it may be a thing, our possible public debut” hints Patrick.

Jake and Peter agree that Senior Open Mic might be the right place and the right time for Open the Floodgates to share their talents with the rest of us.

So, next time you are wanting to hear new music, talk to one of the members of Open the Floodgates and listen to their incredible talent.
