An in-season analysis and overview on one of the most popular clubs at CB.

One club that garners lots of attention is the Intramural Basketball Club, started by Mr. René Cardenas years ago. With his departure this year, Mr. Armando Diaz has taken the reins and the league has reached new heights.

From the intense trash talk in Schoology to eagerly waiting for the week’s matchups to be posted, intramural fever is in full effect.

So far this season the team to beat is Team Shaqtown, who is currently 7-0. Other teams to watch for are Charlie Barr’s Angels, 16 Days and Junior Mafia, all with one loss.

The most notable storyline, however, is a historic barrier being broken: the gender barrier. Anna Dahl (’15) is the first girl to ever compete in the Intramural circuit.

There has never been a written rule that girls are not allowed to compete, but none have ever felt compelled to participate like Anna.

“I joined intramural because my friends needed an extra player and I thought it would be fun to get back into basketball somehow,” the senior says. “I definitely think more girls should play — It’s really fun.”

The prize for the winner is Chipotle brought to school for the whole team, but it really goes beyond Mexican food. Senior Kevin Vaughn’s (’15) goal for the season is to, “win the rest of our games and exert my dominance over my friends on other teams.”

Bragging rights over friends is by far the best prize for the participants. When asked why they compete,  theplayers most popular answer was similar to Kevin’s, where they seek to win against their friends and have bragging rights.

Chipotle is temporary, but the satisfaction of beating friends is never-ending.

With playoffs around the corner and so much on the line, the games are must see events for any basketball fans.

The Intramural action resumes next Thursday at all school lunch.
