Highway 50 is being fixed. How is this affecting those in the CB community?
Highway 50, built in 1968, is currently being repaired. The repairs will last two months and will retrofit the highway and fix the existing lanes on the stretch of road between Midtown and Broadway. These repairs are shutting down the highway and causing commuters who take 50 daily to find other routes.
Many students and teachers at Christian Brothers take the highway on their commute to school every day and explained how their route to school and work were changed by the project.
“It’s taken me about ten extra minutes to get to CB” explained Mr. Findley McIntosh, a Davis resident. “But I assume it is going to make the freeway better, I’m an optimist”
Another Davis commuter also had a comment on how this construction has affected his drive to CB.
“It is quiet a long journey now to get to school, however I don’t stop believing [that I am still able to get to school on time]” said Jack Steindorf (’15).
Obviously, those in Davis are positive about what these repairs can bring, but as of now, their driving time has been increased by them.
Besides those in Davis, students and staff in other parts of the region have also been affected by Fix 50.
“I’ve changed routes — I live in Fair Oaks and have had to completely change my commute as a result of Fix 50.” Said Mr. Rene Cardenas. “Though my new route still takes about the same time to get to school as my old one”
Most of the region, from Fair Oaks to Woodland, is feeling the effects of the renovations on highway 50, but not all are negative.
“Mine is actually easier now, I take 5 south and traffic is light.” answered Ms. Diane Tolomeo when asked about her commute.
Whether negative or positive, the Fix 50 project has effected most residents in the city as highway 50 cuts straight through the middle one of the busiest sections of the city. Hopefully we can all remain optimistic like Mr. Mac and hope that when the highway reopens on June 25 that it is better than ever.
