Lent is a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works in preparation of the celebration of Easter. March 5 was ash Wednesday and the start of Lent this year. The Talon went around to ask a few people what they gave up for lent this year.
Mr. Paul Havey (’81) gave up peanut butter and Facebook for Lent because they play a dominant role in his life at times and Lent keeps him in check during this time.
During Lent he prays more and tries to do more service for the poor as well as do the Rosary.
“As far as my faith is concerned, I do more faith reading” Paul Havey tells the Talon about his many habits during Lent.
Lent is the time to “value what is important” Mr. Havey says enthusiastically. It is also a time to look at one’s faith and reflect on the past months to see what kind of person one has become.
Alexander Samuel (’17) gave up YouTube for lent so he can focus on working in school as well as “be more active” he says as he strives for his goal. Last year he gave up candy, which is a normal well known desire to give up during lent.
The Lenten season is taken seriously, but a few did not give up anything. The Talon goes to find out why they did not give up anything for this well known Catholic/Christian season.
Instead of giving up something Angela de Guzman (’14) decided to do something simple yet productive, “I decided I would do 50 push ups and 50 sit-ups,” adding that she will also do lunges depending on what she feels like doing that day.
Jackson Holman (’17) did not give up anything for Lent because he does not see a point in giving up anything for a God that will always love you and forgive you for your sins.
Some people feel they are close enough to God they do not have to give up anything such as myself. Lent is a time of reflection and fasting but fasting can be interpreted differently.
Fasting is usually associated with food but can be with other objects such as video games, Facebook and YouTube as well as other social media entertainments. CB students have taken lent seriously but in their own way rather it be physical or spiritual.
