Lady Lax lays the groundwork for latest lacrossers.

Women’s lacrosse, otherwise known as LAX is one of CB’s non-cut sports, allowing all ladies who have not played before to try it out.The team welcomes players new to the sport every year.

Even though new members come out each year, the women’s lacrosse team is still competitive and worthwhile.

Sophomores Meghan Martis (’16) and Audrey Nelson (’16) are both new members of the JV lax team this year. Neither of them have ever played lacrosse before, but decided to go out this year to try something new.

“It’s hard going out not knowing anything about the sport, but it was a quick transition from basketball once I started playing,” Audrey says.

Meghan mentioned that the coaches, Ms. Cheryl Flaherty and Mr. Scott Coyner, have been encouraging.

“The coaches have been really supportive and patient when the new players, like us, make mistakes which makes it easier to be out there and have a good time,” she comments.

Most girls on varsity even were new to the sport as freshmen. Most of the girls have enjoyed it so much, that they recruit their own friends to come try it out.

“So many have came out because the girls on the team have really blown it up and had their friends come try it out,” Ms. Flaherty says. “As a coach, we don’t recruit too much.”

The experienced and returning girls on the team accept the “newbie” players and support their choice of challenging themselves with a sport they know almost nothing about.

AnnaMarie Carmazzi (15′) was new to the sport as a freshman and has become an avid lacrosse player, contributing largely to the varsity team this year as a center. She welcomes the newbies and is excited to have them out trying something new.

“I remember when I started it was super hard and not anywhere near easy,” she remarks, “So I try to help them out.”

This year,  Varsity and JV have jumped into a new season with high expectations and lofty goals.

The varsity team defeated their rival, Bella Vista a few weeks back by a landslide, 18-4 and recently beat Livermore this past Friday 21-14. The season is looking up and the Talon wishes them the best in their 2014 season.
