The Christian Brothers 2014 Mens Varsity Basketball team has faced much success in this season. They are 6-1 in league so far, with their only loss being to league leader Del Campo in a very close game. Being ranked second in Division III according to MaxPreps, they are expected to move on to playoffs in a few weeks.

Finn Whetstone (’15), a two year varsity player, believes the boys will breeze through playoffs.

“There aren’t too many skilled teams in our league,” Finn says, “so I think that we’ll definitely have a big chance of doing well in playoffs this year.”

The boys have defeated almost all teams in their league by a landslide, recently beating Casa Roble this past Friday 56-21.

The seniors this year have contributed largely to the team’s success. Prestin Barnett (’14), Matt Vanenburg (’14), and Gabe Trujillo (’14) lead the team as captains.

One of the team’s highest scorers with 9.4 points per game so far this season is Brandon Thompson (’14). Aside from scoring, Brandon brings moxie and flash to the Falcons.

“I bring a lot of pizzazz to the team,” Brandon answers. “I predict that we’ll make it to Sleep Train Arena [site of the section championship game] this year because we’ve worked our way up to be the best team in Division III.”

According to MaxPreps, Modesto Christian is the number three seed in Division III with a record of 9-0 in league and Fairfield the number one seed with a record of 20-4. The boys have not yet played against either of these teams, but may face them in playoffs.

Brandon thinks they could beat Modesto Christian because they haven’t had the best season with an overall record of 16-8, including preseason, but it may be different with Fairfield.

“Fairfield will be our biggest competition and we will most likely see them at [Sleep Train Arena]” Thompson says.

Hopefully the team can perform well in playoffs and make it to Sleep Train Arena, where the final playoff championship is held. The CB community wishes them good luck!
