The Talon went to find out how many CB students save lives every year.

Christian Brothers High School hosts several blood drives a year to give Falcons the chance to help save a life. Several students take this opportunity for a variety of reasons, while other students hesitate due to fears or uncertainty of requirements to give blood.

Donating blood for the first time can be a scary experience. However, people find comfort in knowing that their sacrifice helps to save lives.

“I’m donating to save a life, and my blood is really good,” the second time donor Quentin Barbosa (’15) tells the Talon.

What our friend Quentin is telling the Talon is that some people have the “O” blood type, which is able to be accepted by all other blood types during transfusions.

You do not need the “O” blood type to donate. The only requirements are to be at least sixteen years of age, in good health, and drug free. Patients require clean blood to ensure that their conditions do not become worse because of tainted blood being introduced to their circulation.

The majority of people do fine donating blood. An enthusiastic Vince Villegas (’15) reported that “[he felt] great, and could run a marathon” after his first time donating blood.

Of course, this is not the case for everyone.

“I’m really lightheaded and I feel like I’m going to pass out,” is what Nici Lopez (’15) had to report after her first time donating blood.

Even in her state of agony, she reported that she didn’t regret doing it, because she loves helping people.

While the experience of donating blood varies from person to person, there is a general consensus that it feels good to give back to the sick. So if you are able to, make sure to head down to the next blood drive to help save a life.
