This CB busy bee is creating quite the buzz.
For the past five years filled with stings and bees, Joe Krieg (’14) has immersed himself into the world of beekeeping. With the help and support of his mother, Joe has turned an 8thgrade summer project into a source of revenue.
“Beekeeping is used to describe farmers who cultivate bee hives to produce honey and other related items to be sold at the market,” Joe tells the Talon. Some of the items that he sells are honey straws, honeycomb and bees wax for candles. You can purchase these items by the can or individually.
“Joe’s honey is the sweetest and it’s organic, which makes it that much better,” says fellow student Anthony Rutherford (’14).
Joe keeps his hives in several locations.
“I have three fully functioning hives right now. I keep one at home and the other two at my friend’s farm,” Joe states.
Due to the strict city laws restricting the number of hives in an urban community, Joe moved his hives to a friend’s farm in Wilton, where they are no restrictions. Joe would be fined $200 dollars for having more than one active hive at his house. This pricey fine is enough to keep Joe a law abiding citizen.
The senior initially started his hobby thanks to Boy Scouts.
“I started to learn how to beekeep thanks to the help of my Scoutmaster for my troop,” he says. “He took me under his wing and gave me all the tricks and equipment I would need to be successful.”
When he’s not farming honey or studying for school, the soon to be Eagle Scout likes to explore the outdoors.
“I love to go hiking and back packing in the wilderness when I have the free time.”
Joe’s advice for his fellow Falcons peers is to “always have your eye on the big picture, stay focused on your goal and you can achieve it”.
Whether in the classroom or in the wilderness Joe Krieg is making a buzz. CB is fortunate to have such a talented student.
