Women’s sports at CB have been a perennial power in the San Joaquin Section, with our women’s volleyball team winning the section title recently and softball, soccer and golf also having recent success.
Another sport that has been a power year in and year out is our women’s basketball team.
The Lady Falcons basketball team has been one of the most consistent teams in the section, winning a section title last season and going undefeated in Capital Valley Conference play both seasons.
However, there will be many holes to fill this season if our ladies are looking for back-to-back titles.
The team loses the dynamic backcourt duo of Niel Valmores ’13 and Ana Burch ’13, along with a handful of other essential seniors that have had key roles in the last two title winning teams.
The only senior on the team this year is versatile captain Alicia Gonzales (’14), but the Lady Falcons have a deep young core they look to build around Alicia this season.
One major asset the team has in their favor this season is size. Kira McKechnie (’15) and Dominique McNeely (’16) provide one of the most formidable frontcourts in the section.
“It’s a little soon to predict where we will finish this season, but I am confident we will win the league,” Kira says. “After league, it’s hard to tell where we stand.”
Junior Christine Cotterill (’15) embodies the confidence that the whole team carries with them (being defending section champs can help with that).
When asked about the keys to the team, Christine was straight forward and to the point.
“Kira in the post and Alicia on the outside [are the keys],” she says. “If they play well we be really hard to beat.”
The team has set the model for consistency over recent seasons, and looks to keep the tradition of excellence running as they try to get their straight third league title and second straight section title.
The Lady Falcons will host the Christian Brothers Holiday Classic this weekend, so be sure to come support as they look to start the season strong.
