Find out what goes into selecting the themes for all CB dances.

According to CB tradition, a theme is a must for every dance. From smaller open dances to large productions like Homecoming and the Family Dance, student council works hard to choose an appropriate theme.

Picking a theme is more than just shouting out an idea and agreeing on it. When deciding on a dance theme, student council must consider dress code policies, students’ reaction whether they will love it or hate it, if it will attract students to go, and possible decorations needed.

Each dance has a specific council in charge of choosing the theme. For example, the theme for the Sadie Hawkins dance is chosen by the senior class council. Bigger dances require all four class councils and ASB to choose the perfect theme. Upper Division Ball’s theme is chosen by the Leadership class next semester.

Once a theme is chosen, it goes to Ms. Hesser for review. She can either approve the theme or give student council her concerns about the theme so they make any necessary changes. With Ms. Hesser’s approval, the theme is set.

Senior class council’s Neena Lynton (’14) will not announce anything yet, but she guarantees “Sadie’s is going to be a blast” and she is “so excited for February”.

With an unknown theme for Upper Division Ball, students have suggestions. Junior Dante Mazza (’15) wants to “go back to the 1920’s with a Great Gatsby theme”. The Great Gatsby was a possible Homecoming theme; however, it did not lend itself to the idea of a semi formal or casual dress code which Grease did.

Alyse Toth (’14) believes “the mystery of a masquerade ball would be fun because its a classic”.

Regardless of the theme, Neena advises to “go to the dances, whether you agree with the theme or not — you’ll have fun because you’re hanging with your friends and that’s always a fun time.”
