It’s no secret October is here with football in full swing, but lets not take our eyes off the Major League Baseball playoffs that are underway.  Our two local teams, the Oakland Atheltics and San Francisco Giants had two different stories in the 2013 season.

The San Francisco Giants coming off their second world championship in three years were a disappointment this season.  With injuries to key players like Marco Scutaro, Pablo Sandoval, and Angel Pagan the Giants just didn’t have the depth to replace these guys.  The backbone of the Giants for years has been the pitching staff. But this year the starting staff ,with the exception of Madison Bumgarner, really had a roller coaster season.

Across the bay, the Oakland Athletics topped the American League West for the second straight season.  A’s fans have spoken on the magical run these past two seasons.

“Last season when we lost to the Detroit Tigers in game 5 of the ALDS. The fans stayed in the stadium after the game and we chanted, ‘Lets go Oakland’ It was such a cool expierenced to be apart of,”says lifetime A’s fan Dominic Smith (’15).

The 2012 A’s responded with a curtain call and acknowledged the fans.

L.C. Shorter (’14) explains the amazing expierence last season when the A’s clinched the division this season.

“The atmosphere was indescribable, it was crazy,” the senior says. “We didn’t know what to do — this season was just a shock to us.  It was amazing.”

This season expectations were higher and the A’s once again responded.  They finished the 2013 season at 96-66 and another AL West championship.

The special connection between fans and the A’s is very powerful.

“We kind of grew up with the players,” Dominic says. “We watch them here in Sacramento with River Cats and then watch them succeed in Oakland.”

This postseason, the A’s have a rematch with the Detroit Tigers starting Friday.  Hopefully the A’s have a deep postseason run and keep the World Series trophy in the Bay Area.
