With the new theatre well under construction, the Talon looks at the impact the new venue will have on CB’s vocal program.

As many know by now, CB has began construction on an elaborate new theatre for the performing arts. This new venue will provide amazing opportunities for students involved in all aspects of the arts, including choir. To discover exactly what the new theatre will do for CB’s choir, the Talon interviewed the conductor we all know and love, Mr. Ronald Slabbinck, the Director of the Visual & Performing Arts Department.

Many members of the choral program have wondered if the way they perform will have to change as the new theatre is put into use, a claim rebutted by Mr. Slabbinck.

“The choral program specifically, other than actually being able to perform concerts in a legitimate theatre as opposed to a gymnasium or having to go off campus, is not going to change any of it’s operations,” he said.

The changes that will be coming to the choral program include a new dress for female singers that Mr.Slabbinck describes as “updated” and “classy”. But the major changes do not appear in the form of material items, but rather in the potential for the choir.

A new stage will give CB the opportunity to host more vocal groups students can enjoy and learn from.

“This [will] give our students the chance to work with high caliber educators and professionals,” Mr. Slabbinck says. “I  would love to see us host a choral festival and/or a jazz festival.”

Hosting these festivals would provide learning opportunities, chances for choirs to showcase their talent, and fun musical festivals for any student to enjoy.

Overall, the new theatre will provide CB students with a chance to expand their artistic abilities and share them with the community.
