CB’s ceramics team does its part to help out the Sacramento Food Bank.

The Empty Bowl Luncheon and Supper is held every year, and is the primary fundraiser for the Sacramento River City Food Bank.

The Luncheon and Supper are meals  where guests pay $30 and $60 for simple bowl of soup, bread hor d’ouevres, which is donated by local restaurants. After the meal is served, guests are given donated ceramic bowls made by ceramics teams and classes, senior homes, and individual potters from around around Sacramento.

“CB just happens to be the biggest provider of the empty bowls for the last five or six years,” says proud ceramics teacher Mr. Robert Boriskin.

When the guests leave the dinner, they get to leave with a beautiful handmade bowl in hand.

“It reminds them every time they eat out of it, that there are people out there who don’t have enough food to eat,” the ceramics instructor says.

All of the money made at the dinner is directly donated to the Food Bank to serve food for those in need.

In order to promote the Empty Bowl Lunch-In, CB hosts a Bowl-a-thon, where students come early in the morning and make empty bowls. This event attracts a lot of media to advertise the fundraiser. Local news stations cover the event almost every year to spread the word.

“I have made many empty bowls here at CB for the fundraiser,” says substitute teacher Ms. Christianna Golden (’06). “I am a big part of the CB art community and I love getting a chance to help out those in need through beautiful art.”

The Empty Bowl dinner is a great opportunity for CB to practice service learning, and all students who have or currently take ceramics are welcome to participate, so visit room 306 to sign up.
