Participating in three sports is very rare but not unheard of. Find out what it takes to be a three-sport star.
Being an athlete in itself is hard work and takes a lot of dedication as well as time. But what does it take to participate at a varsity level in three sports? A select few at Christian Brothers high school are part of one athletic team for each of the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons.
“I really enjoy participating in football, basketball, and track,” says senior Ben McFadden (’13). “They are all cool sports I am so lucky I can do all of them.”
Playing so many sports takes a large amount of time and energy which makes it hard for these students to get their school work done as well. With a sport going on in each season there is no time to take a break and get ahead they constantly must manage their time between academics and competitive sports.
“It is extremely hard doing three sports — it is hard to find time to do everything that needs to get done,” Ben says. “But I make it work and always have.”

Although playing three sports is a huge commitment, Ben says being a part of so many teams is worth the long and tiring days.
“Since it is so difficult to participate in three sports, one would wonder why these athletes would not just focus on one sport,” said the senior, who also is the ASB co-Rally Chair. ”
“I couldn’t just do one sport — I would regret it. I mean if I can do [them all] then why not! I get to meet a lot of different people through each sport and have different friendships in each one which is cool.”
These three-sport athletes are dedicated to all of their sports and can handle their time evenly among sports and grades to be successful in both. The coaches at Christian Brothers are very supportive of their athletes and their decision to do more than one sport.
We will all need to watch out for these competitive athletes that give their time and effort to both school and sports all year long.
