Learn about the new fad that has taken over our generation and Christian Brothers: Hipsters.

As I enter the Coffee Garden to start my evenings homework, I am welcomed by the scent of ground coffee beans and a friendly worker wearing a floral dress and glasses that are straight from the ’70s. She greets me with a soft “hello” and asks me what I want. I order a mocha and take my seat in the back.

This coffee house is notorious for hipsters and live music. I almost feel out of place among the many black rimmed glasses, high-waisted everything, and stubble.

Over the past couple of years, the hipster movement has revived and made its way into music, style, and the way we take pictures. The Coffee Garden is one of the many hipster hot-spots of Sacramento.  Ethan Schanberger (’13) defined a hipster as “someone who discourages anything mainstream, lives a relaxed carefree lifestyle, and doesn’t believe in anything publicized.”

The hipster originated in the streets of San Francisco in the 1950s and blossomed into burgeoning scenes in places like Seattle, Chicago, and Brooklyn. It is now seeping into Christian Brothers as well.

Over the past couple of weeks I have noticed subtle hints, like the Coffee Garden, that this movement is catching on. Oversized cardigans, floral pants, cool socks, tribal backpacks, and anything thrifted are definite indicators.

But, it does not stop there. According to Ethan, “a new way to look like a hipster is to use Instagram.”

Instagram is one of the most popular applications used by CB students, all you have to do is add a filter to your picture and it fits the qualifications.

Every generation has styles that come and go. Will there be a style that will stay as long as the hipsters?
