Find out how CB’s new Tailgate Club is livening up Thursday mornings.

At first glance, there might not seem to be much to the back parking lot at Christian Brothers High School. Traffic piles up as late students squeeze their cars into the lot’s compact parking spots.

But on late start days, the student lot comes alive as music blasts from car stereos and the smell of the barbeque penetrates the air.

The Tailgate Club has arrived.

From the usual donuts and juice to a more unusual barbequed elk and bread rolls, the Tailgate Club serves a delicious breakfast every Thursday morning.  The key to entry into this weekly party is bring a dish to share with friends.

Some might be wondering where this ingenious idea originated.  The club has only met a couple times officially, but the football boys have been hosting their own tailgate parties for quite some time.

“We came out here after morning workouts one time,” co-founder Zach Ewertsen (’14) says. “We sat on the tailgate and had a good time with some of our friends and decided to make it a club.”

Zach has a lot of hope for the club in the coming year. He hopes that “on club days and long lunches we can bring it onto campus and have barbeques at lunch.”

Any CB student is welcome, provided they bring their own potluck dish.

“You get free food. You get to listen to country music and have a good time with your friends,” Zach says.

The new club is already expanding beyond late start days. Zach’s co-founder, Nate Ashby (’13), explains, “we tailgate whenever — we will send out text messages or post on Twitter and Instagram.”

For seniors like Marco Molina (’13), tailgating gives them the perfect opportunity to do something before school.

“It gives people with no A set stuff to do,” Marco says. “We do things like play with the football and soccer ball.”

So next time you forget it’s a late start day and get to school at 8:30 A.M., stop by the Tailgate Club and grab a bite to eat—all are welcome.
