Helen Keller grew up blind and deaf. Her incredible life endured great struggle and her story still resonates with audiences 44 years later. Two Christian Brothers students, Garrick Sigl (’15) and Bella Bagatelos (’16), have been cast in the production The Miracle Worker, a biographic story of Keller’s life.

Both Garrick and Bella are a part of Sacramento Theatre Company’s Youth Professional Conservatory. Garrick plays the role of James Keller, a character Garrick says is a “conceited, stuck-up brat who doesn’t believe that Helen can learn anything.”

Garrick has been involved in theatre for 10 years and told the Talon that this last year has been his favorite year in acting.

“I got to be in Our Town, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Julius Caesar, Dead Man Walking, and I also got to puppeteer Little Shop Of Horrors.”

Garrick auditioned for The Miracle Worker because it is a “great story” and Helen Keller “had a remarkable life in which I really adored.” After The Miracle Worker, Garrick will play the Apprentice Scrooge in STC’s production of A Christmas Carol.

At six years old, Bella became involved in Community Theatre and quickly grew to love gracing the stage. She will be portraying the challenging role of Helen Keller in this production. Although Bella does not have to memorize lines, she still must learn how to portray different emotions.

“It’s really weird playing a character who not only can’t see or hear, but can’t formulate thoughts because she never had a chance to learn [our] language,” the freshman says. “It’s been a challenge, but [it is] super fun.”

Bella is a part of STC and Music Circus, and has been in dozens of plays/musicals such as Oliver!, A Christmas Carol, The Music Man, and Fiddler on the Roof.

The Miracle Worker will be running at the Sacramento Theatre Company until October 28th, so make sure to go see our Falcons perform on stage.
