“We’re the [best]. We’re always going to be the best.”
Daniel Sipes (’13), a member of the Lords of the J intramural basketball team, is very confident in his teams abilities this season. A lot of his confidence comes from the all-star lineup: Dominic Loeffler (’13), Kevin Klotz (’13), Rob Belme (’13), Chris Nestor (’13), and Ben Taylor (’14).
The Lords of the J’s strategy is very complex. The team captain Kevin Klotz’ starts the game when he walks on the court, intimidating the opposing team with intense screaming and yelling. This approach is followed up by the rest of the team, but still lead by Captain Kevin.
“It’s a team tactic, but Kevin executes the best,” Daniel says.
Along with their scare tactics, they run a convoluted offense on the court. They have no assigned positions, and they all see themselves as point guards. In essence they share the responsibilities of every area of the court.
As chaotic as their offense sounds, Daniel says the Lords of the J have a potent attack.
“Of course, we have plays,” the senior says. “We get real serious on the court.”
owever, he would not disclose any more about their offensive plays, proudly saying we would have to see the greatness on the court.
The Lords of the J practice rarely practice, yet their team chemistry rivals that of the famed Lakers duo of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.
No one officially proclaims themselves as “best on the team” but they constantly compliment each other’s style and jokingly boast about their personal skills, making comical remarks such as “I’m the best. I’m always gonna be the best”.
Lords of the J fear no opposition, and will always be ready to defend their self proclaimed title of the best team in intramural basketball.
“We may not have talent,” Dominic says. “But have the willpower.”
