Read about one CB student’s journey in becoming an artist.
Every artist has a different style and sometimes they turn to each other for inspiration.
Christian Brothers art student Nathan Lowe (’13) is influenced by many artists — in the art world and in his family.
“One of the main influences for my work is [Austrian painter] Gottfried Helnwein,” he says. “His art inspires me to be myself no matter what anyone thinks. He promotes difference and individuality. His art expresses what he had gone through and his response to life.”
Nathan expresses his belief in individuality by using art as a way to express himself. Any feelings, passions, or emotions he thinks he has bottled up can be expressed on his canvas. He even recently has made an untitled piece that he feels reflects where he is now in his art.
The CB senior also has to thank his family for pushing him in the art world — especially thank brother. Nathan’s artistic abilities did not come naturally, but for his brother it did. Nathan says,
“My brother — he was naturally talented. He could draw the human proportions with ease by the age of 6-7,” Nathan says. “When I saw him draw, it made feel far behind and jealous that he had such a skill in something that I wanted to do well in.”
However, his brother’s natural talent did not discourage him. Nathan works hard everyday to improve on his art and with the help of his father, he grows everyday in various techniques.
He admits he’s “not the best artist” — but from his experience, Nathan advises people who find comfort and peace in art to pursue further their creativity. The young Falcon artists also recommends that one should never be discouraged by others and most importantly feel free to express and be themself.
