This Christian Brothers Student has found a way to make a little money while he works on his hobby.
After three years of taking Christian Brothers art classes, Antonio Alvarado ’13 found himself with an excess of paintings.
A large majority of the Christian Brothers community is in the art program, where over the course of four years, students learn to sketch, paint, and mold.
Alvarado claimed his 75 plus paintings were just “gathering dust” until a friend offered him a few dollars for one of his pieces.
Excited and enthused, Antonio immediately accepted the offer, even though he would later realize that he had sold the painting for “less than the canvas cost.”
Since then, Antonio has become quite the businessman, selling seven of his pieces for prices “around 25 dollars.”
He encourages many of his associates in the art department to follow his example and sell their artwork, even if just to family and friends.
“It’s better to have it appreciated and loved,” Alvarado says.
Selling artwork can be a great way to keep funding one’s passion, as well as buying a student’s artwork can help inspire them to continue mastering their craft.
When asked what his advice would be to first time art sellers, Alvarado smiled and said, “just sell it for more than the canvas cost.”
