Real Men Sing

Men’s Choir is rapidly becoming one of the most popular classes on campus.

A lot of people incorrectly assume that choir classes are only for women. The opposite is the case, especially at Christian Brothers, where there are a wide variety of choir classes for men.

Men’s Choir specifically is a great class for men who wish to begin mastering this difficult skill. Howard Turley (’15) is enhancing his singing abilities through this particular class.

Howard already had the prior experience of working in a Christian Brothers musical, where he found all the teachers and students in the arts department to be “helping, understanding, and friendly.”

Even though Howard had participated in a Christian Brothers musical and found the people involved inclusive and kind, he didn’t really feel confident in his singing. When he expressed this concern to his newfound musical friends, they encouraged him to take Men’s Choir.

Now that he is taking class, he is experiencing the guidance of Mr. Ron Slabbinck, the Men’s Choir teacher and has found the confidence he was looking for.

Just so far this year, Mr. Slabbinck has taught students like Howard breathing techniques, pitch, and tempo. This spectacular teacher does a great job of being gentle and caring as he leads his students on the complex and difficult journey that is mastering singing.

Howard has already noticed a “dramatic improvement” in his singing abilities after only taking this class for a few months. Having participated in freshmen masses as a singer, he plans to take his singing abilities even further by taking Honors Chorale.

Men and women alike are masters of the craft and should be noticed as well as appreciated for their participation in this brilliant art form. We are lucky to have some of the best singers in Sacramento honing their craft right here at Christian Brothers.
