After 35 years of coaching at Jesuit High School, Mr. Dan Carmazzi returns to his alma mater. Will he give CB an advantage in the Holy Bowl game?

The rivalry between Christian Brothers and Jesuit High Schools has been set in stone for generations. But 35 years ago, a twist of fate left a Christian Brothers alumnus coaching for the opposite team.

“I always knew I wanted to come back to my alma mater,” says Mr. Dan Carmazzi ’71, who recently left behind a legacy of  over three decades of coaching and teaching at Jesuit High School to return to the blue and red.

The irony of the situation is not lost to the football coach, who insists that “[leaving Jesuit] was a difficult decision.” But CB’s new AP government teacher was pleased to find that the “[Christian Brothers] students make [him] feel comfortable” and he is really “looking forward” to exploring this new chapter of his life.

In addition to leading the Jesuit Marauders’ varsity football team to two section titles along with numerous wins over the Falcons, Coach Carmazzi was an assistant athletic director and taught physical education, driver’s education, AP government, and civics at the all-boys Catholic high school.

With Holy Bowl only a few days away, everyone is curious to know if having a former Jesuit coach will be an advantage to Christian Brothers.

“No,” confirms Mr. Carmazzi. “[Jesuit has] a brand new system and a brand new coach.”

Despite not having a leg-up on the competition, the hard-working assistant coach insists that he is “confident, but not cocky” about Saturday’s big game.

“It’s going to be a big challenge,” warns the alumnus, “This is one of Jesuit’s best teams in four or five years — but it is also one of [Christian Brothers’] best teams.”

Under the guidance of Head Coach George Petrissans, Coach Carmazzi and the other great varsity assistant coaches, the outcome of the game will be up to the Falcons and the strength and dedication they bring to the field on Saturday night.
